How to Measure Your Pet for the Perfect Crate: A Step-by-Step Guide

Traveling with your furry friend can be a thrilling adventure, but it’s important to make sure they’re comfortable and safe during their journey following the below Pet crate sizing guide. One of the most crucial aspects of pet travel is sizing your pet correctly, so they can be fitted with the right size crate.

At Chauf-fur, we know how important (and sometimes difficult) it is to measure your pet correctly. Your pet must be able to stand in their natural position, sit down and turn around when inside an IATA approved carrier. If your pet is not fitted to the correct size carrier, the airlines may refuse to let them travel.

To measure your pet, stand them against a wall and use a chalk mark to measure the top of their head, shoulder height, and nose to the base of their tail, as shown in the picture. It’s as easy as that!

We’ve also created an easy-to-use pet crate sizing guide for your convenience:

Tip of the nose to base of tail (excluding the actual tail) = A

Ground to the elbow joint, front leg = B

The widest part of your pet = C

Floor to the top of the head, or ears whichever is higher = D

Once you have these four measurements, you can select a travel crate that will provide the most comfort and safety to your beloved pet during their travels.

IATA Approved Pet Crate Requirements: How to Keep Your Furry Friend Safe and Comfy During Their Journey

  • The crate must be made of fiberglass, metal, rigid plastics, or welded metal mesh. Sorry wooden cage, you’re not allowed.
  • The crate must be clean and leak-proof, ensuring that your furry friend stays dry and comfy.
  • Any wheels attached to the crate must be removed to prevent accidents and injuries during the journey.
  • Your pet must be able to stand, turn, and lie down in a natural manner, ensuring they have enough space to move around.
  • The crate must be adequately ventilated, with the majority of the ventilation system being situated in the upper part, so your pet can breathe easily.
